List of Formula One World Drivers' Champions

Formula 1 (F1) is recognized as the pinnacle of open-wheel auto racing, operating under the regulations set by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsports. The term "formula" in its name refers to the specific set of rules that all participants and their cars must adhere to.

Formula 1 World Championship Structure

The Formula 1 World Championship season comprises a series of races known as "Grands Prix." These races are typically held on purpose-built circuits, though occasionally they take place on closed city streets. The FIA awards the World Drivers' Championship to the most successful Formula 1 driver throughout the season, based on a points system calculated from the results of each Grand Prix. A world champion is crowned when it becomes mathematically impossible for any other competitor to surpass their total points, regardless of the outcomes of the remaining races. However, the official award ceremony for the championship doesn't occur until the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony, held in various cities after the season concludes.

Notable Drivers and Records

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton share the record for the most World Drivers' Championships, each having won the title seven times. Juan Manuel Fangio ranks third with five titles. Schumacher also holds the record for the most consecutive drivers' titles, securing five between the 2000 and 2004 seasons. Nigel Mansell holds the record for competing in the highest number of seasons before winning the World Championship, entering Formula 1 in 1980 and claiming the title in 1992, a span of 13 seasons. Nico Rosberg has the record for the most Grand Prix starts before winning his first title, with 206 Grands Prix between the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix and the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel is the youngest winner of the World Drivers' Championship, having been 23 years and 134 days old when he won the 2010 championship. Conversely, Fangio is the oldest winner, at 46 years and 41 days old when he won the 1957 title.

Championship Statistics

As of the 2024 season, out of 777 drivers who have started a Formula 1 Grand Prix, 34 different drivers have won a total of 75 titles. Giuseppe Farina was the first Formula 1 World Drivers' Champion in the 1950 championship, and Max Verstappen is the current title holder for the 2024 season. Drivers from the United Kingdom have won the title 20 times across 10 drivers, more than any other nation, followed by Brazil, Finland, and Germany with three drivers each. Drivers representing Scuderia Ferrari have won the title 15 times across 9 drivers, more than any other team, with McLaren coming in second with 12 titles across 7 drivers. The Drivers' Championship has been decided in the final race of the season 30 times in the 75 seasons it has been awarded. Schumacher holds the record for clinching the championship with the most Grands Prix remaining in a season (six), which he did when he won the 2002 title at that year's French Grand Prix. Due to the points system, on two occasions (John Surtees in the 1964 season and Ayrton Senna in the 1988 season) a world champion scored fewer overall points than the driver who finished second in the championship.
